1999 – 2001 – 14 million USD

Designed originally as the Holiday Inn, Maputo, in a JV with SKM Architects, this was one of our first projects to be completed in Mozambique. The brief from the then MD of Southern Sun, Helder Perreira, was to design a flagship hotel with in his native country, the architecture with Portuguese influence and the first hotel to be built in Maputo after independence. Perreira wanted this hotel to look totally different to any other HI.

The site is a very narrow “banana” shape and our response to the site and the brief resulted in a 159 bedroom hotel over three levels, comprising three wings, the North double bank wing (rooms on both sides of the corridor) central wing, the same and the south wing comprising only sea facing rooms. The hotel has a timeless Portuguese feel and has become an iconic landmark in the city of Maputo.
